SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 37

Urging the Congress of the United States to protect and uphold the first amendment to the constitution of the United States.

Whereas, The first amendment to the constitution of the United States provides, inter alia, that: "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech...or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances"; and
Whereas, The first amendment to the constitution of the United States recognizes and embodies those ideals upon which our nation was founded; and
Whereas, There is an emerging "democracy movement" throughout the world to obtain the freedoms expressed by the first amendment to the constitution of the United States; and
Whereas, Many Americans have stood in harm's way and even given their lives defending the freedoms expressed by the first amendment to the constitution of the United States; and
Whereas, Misguided efforts to unfairly abridge the freedom of speech and other basic rights contained in the first amendment to the constitution of the United States have mounted in recent years; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Congress of the United States is urged to resist any efforts to weaken the application of the first amendment tothe constitution of the United States; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to each member of the United States Congress.
